Out of all of the beautiful places we visited in Thailand, Koh Tao was my favorite! It was very chill and laid back, but at night time energetic and fun! I felt right at home when I visited and I can see why so many people end up staying longer than they expected to. You don’t want to miss this place! Here is a list of my favorite things to do in Koh Tao!
Top 11 Things To Do In Koh Tao
1. Scuba Dive
No trip to Koh Tao is complete without diving! Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places in the world to get your scuba certification, and I highly recommend you do it! Shane and I only had 3 days in Koh Tao and we wanted to explore the island, so we decided to do a discover dive instead of getting our full certification. I REGRET IT!! I wish we would have gone all in and gotten certified. You can read about my scuba experience with Koh Tao Divers here.
2. Pub Crawl
On Monday / Wednesday / Friday & Sunday – meet at 6PM at @ Choppers Bar in Sairee. You buy your ticket at the bar (no pre sale) for 480 baht! You get a FREE Bucket, FREE Shots, a FREE Shirt. There is also a special ladyboy performance at Koh Tao’s Queens Cabaret, and a beach party or pool party. Make some new friends and drink plenty of water. Check out the Facebook Group HERE.
3. Koh Nangyan
So Shane and I made the mistake of trying to kayak here, but we got stuck in the ocean and super sunburnt… I recommend taking a taxi boat instead! Beware – there are lots of tourists, but the snorkeling is great and there is a really cool viewpoint called Jon Suwan!
4. Snorkel At Shark Bay
If you’re fearless, head to Shark Bay! You are almost guaranteed to see some giant green turtles, and most likely see black tip reef sharks 250 M out. You can get to Shark bay via kayak or boat, or by beach and pay an entrance fee.
5. Catch The Sunset On Sairee Beach
With the boats in the background, this was one of the most memorable sunsets I had ever witnessed.
6. Freedom Beach Viewpoint
We paid 50 Baht to enter here and hung out for a while! After checking out the viewpoint you can cool off with an amazing mango smoothie, swim, snorkel, and sunbathe! This is where Shane fell off of the rock and somehow didn’t die. This is why I always recommend travel insurance! I use and recommend World Nomads.
7. Love Koh Tao Viewpoint
This viewpoint is on the east side, so if you’re a morning person I highly recommend this spot to watch the sunrise!
There is something about paddle boarding that is so fun, yet so relaxing at the same time. And it’s a good way to get a good tan without realizing it!
9. Dinner at Gallery Restaurant
We splurged a little here, and it was SO worth it! The Thai was fantastic, the wine was on point, and we loved the art gallery next door filled with amazing underwater photography.
10. Party on the Beach and Watch The Fire Shows
On our last night in Koh Tao we were pretty wiped out, so we drank a couple drinks and relaxed on bean bag chairs at Fizz. The vibes were great and the fire shows were super fun!
11. Rent a Motorbike and Explore
Be careful on the roads in Koh Tao. We almost made it unscathed, but Shane wiped out ON THE WAY to return the motorbike! Make sure that you take pictures before returning the bike, and beware of scammers. The women was asking for a ridiculous sum of money for one small scratch, but they take your ID so you really have to either talk them down in pricing or pay what they ask for.
Where to Stay In Koh Tao
We stayed two nights in this spectacular Air BnB, and then we stayed in Sairee Beach our last night to be closer to the action. Koh Tao is a small island, so wherever you stay you will be close to anything on your motorbike.
