My first trip to Nusa Penida was chaotic and messy! We didn’t have anything planned out, we took a later boat transfer and so we arrived at the most touristy time, and I had never driven a motorbike before. If you have heard anything about Nusa Penida, it’s that the roads are terrible! Regardless to say I ended up crashing my motorbike an hour into the trip… not ideal!
A 2-Day Nusa Penida Tour route
If you want to avoid getting lost, having to deal with tourists, and having to navigate terrible roads, then I HIGHLY suggest you book a Nusa Penida tour like I did my second time around! I had the best experience with Nusa Penida Travels and I can’t wait to share with you all of the great experiences we had our 2 day Nusa tour. It is also a great option to do a Nusa Penida day tour from Bali if you are short on time, but I suggest giving yourself at least 1.5 full days! If you stick around until the end of the post I’ll let you in on a little deal with them as well!
Day 1 – North and East
Catch a ferry at Sanur Harbor at 8 AM. Pricing goes for 600K IDR both ways and to get from Sanur to Nusa Penida is about a 40 minute fast boat ride. Next, get picked up by your driver and you can keep all of your luggage in the car with your driver! First you will be heading east, to the Rumah Pohon Treehouse.
You can actually stay in these super cool treehouses for only 30 USD per night! Since they are on the East side they are stunning during the sunrise. The Thousand Islands Viewpoint is right next to the Treehouses where you will get a stunning view of Diamond Beach!
Next on the to-do list is Atuh Beach. This beach is a quiet, white-sand beach great for having a cocktail and a delicious grilled meal. It felt surreal being the only ones down at this beach!
Directly next to Atuh beach is the most pristine beach I have ever seen – Diamond Beach. We were too tired climbing up the steps from Atuh Beach to make it to the bottom of Diamond Beach, so the next time I visit Nusa this will be a must-do. Just a fair warning – there is a strong current and lots of coral here so it’s not good for swimming!
Day 2 – West Nusa
This day is all about doing it for the ‘gram! Head out first to Kelingking viewpoint (the famous dino formation!) We had our driver pick us up at 6:15 AM to beat the crowds and this was the best decision we ever made! We had the entire place to ourself! But as soon at 9 AM rolled around, the tour buses came piling in.
If you want to make the trek down to the bottom, wear good shoes and be very careful. It takes about 1 hour down the sketchy steps and even longer back up. Someday I would love to conquer this feat!
Next up is Angel’s Billabong – this is where the roads get REALLY BAD! But it is worth it as you will still be ahead of all of the tourists at this time and you will actually be able to swim in the Billabong safely.
Head to Broken Beach next for more stunning views before grabbing some lunch near Crystal Bay!
IT’S SNORKELING TIME!
You can pay extra for a Nusa Penida snorkeling tour with the manta’s at Crystal Bay… I will advise that this can be either hit or miss. We were lucky enough to find a group of 5 mantas and swim with them for 30 full minutes, but I have had friends who were unlucky and didn’t get to see any. The Lembongan snorkelign price is around an extra 700K. Again – you may or may not be able to see Manta’s! Another thing we forgot to do was take a photo at palm road on our way here!
How Take a Boat to Nusa Penida
There are five separate times the boat leaves from Sanur Harbor: 8 AM, 9 AM, 10:30 AM 16 PM, and 17 PM. It takes about 30-40 minutes (usually the ride is a little rough) and they make you take off your shoes before hopping aboard. If you have luggage the boat staff will help you – just be aware that when you arrive to Nusa you have to trek through the water so I would advise against wearing long pants.
If your next move is to to take a fast boat to Nusa Lembongan, you can usually walk right out to the water and find a ride! It’s very close, only about 15 minutes.
Nusa Penida Transportation
The roads on Nusa are the worst roads I’ve ever witnesses. Even in the safety of a car it was still bumpy and nerve-wracking because the roads are SO small and barely fit two vehicles. The distances are also very long (between 60-90 minutes between destinations) and if you aren’t familiar with the island it’s easy to get lost. I highly advise you to not rent a motorbike – there are crazy accidents every day (myself included my first trip!)
Rest easy by hiring a driver (which you will receive the best one if you book through Nusa Penida Travels!) When you rent a driver you get to locations much quicker (and you have A/C!) The connection on Nusa is also dicey, so with a driver you won’t have to worry about getting lost.
If renting a motorbike is still your thing, and you are a skilled motorbike driver, then go for it! When you arrive to Nusa you will get bombarded by locals tempting you with their motorbikes. Just make sure that you get a good deal and a good motorbike. My first trip to Nusa we got royally ripped off by a motorbike that didn’t work and a fake What’s App number. We ended up having to pay to fix the bike even though it wasn’t even our fault. Motorbikes at the harbor go for around 60,000 IDR/ day.
Nusa Penida Hotel Options
When you book with Nusa Penida Travels your hotel is included! BUT if you decide you want to book your own adventure, options range from homestays, guesthouses, and bungalows. Booking.com has a lot of great options!
